Why did Paul's parent ignore erick cruelty

I think that theses parents were all about appearances than reality. Paul was good at football and they received validation from their friends and other parents. They ignored and enabled Erik's sociopathic behavior to make people believe they were a "successful" family. They even shielded Erik from any consequences for purposely blinding his own brother.
