What happens with the black mailbox that scares the protagonist?

Erik and a friend attack Paul while he is riding a bike. They are in a car, and they attempt to hit him with a baseball bat. Paul was able to get out of the way, however, and the bat smashed the black-metal mailbox right off its pole.
