Why is honesty and truth a theme in tangerine?

In the novel, Tangerine, dishonesty is portrayed as hurtful to those it affects. Antoine and Shandra, for example, each suffer because Antoine does not reside in the school district where he plays football. As a result, Shandra is forced into the background.

Truth is also an important theme. The fact that Paul cannot remember the past.... doesn't make the lies that surround his accident any easier to bear..... the lies simply linger waiting to be exposed.
