I think that Erik's sadistic brother made choices that affected Paul more than anything. Still, Paul does try out for the soccer team despite his visual impairment. Paul helps Luis and Tino save their tangerines. Paul also attacked a teacher. All these choices help Paul develop into a young man of integrity. He understands what taking risks are and how they shape you later in life.
