"eighteen years!" said the passanger looking at the sun
"Gracious creator of day!" To be buried alive for eighteen year!"

Mr. Lorry had been having a conversation with an imaginary "ghostly" figure. Lorry is drifting in and out of sleep imagining this specter talking to him about being buried for 18 years. At the very end of the chapter one of the passengers says this quote which seems rather creepy.
