Barstad is always trying to let on that he is more important than he really is. He repeatedly calls Defrage "Jacques", the secret greeting of the brotherhood, to look like he is "in the know". He also tries to claim knowledge of the death of Gaspard, insinuating that he is "in the know" about supposedly classified revolutionary information.
