Charles Darnay asks Manette's permission to court his daughter, and also attempts to reveal his identity. Darnay carries guilt for courting Lucie and knowing his uncle was responsible for the Doctor's imprisonment. Dr. Manette, however, is not emotionally ready for this declaration.... almost as if he already knowns and asks Darnay to keep his secret until the morning of his wedding. This inconsideration distresses Manette, and he locks himself away with his tools.... making shoes.
