Explain the irony of the revolutionary phrase "The republic one and indivisible of liberty, equality, fraternity, and death"

There is no way that liberty, equality, fraternity, and death can exist in the same world. Death would ask that the people turn on one another which is hardly what one would expect of the people who are free, equal, and brothers.
