Jerry Cruncher's secret nighttime activity is grave robbing. Cruncher is nicknamed the "resurrection man". He literally sells the dead to science thus resurrecting them from the grave for a new purpose. We see imprisonment as a type of death throughout the novel with the few lucky getting to leave prison and start a new life. Even leaving prison dead becomes a resurrection of sorts. There is also the theme of the double life. Jerry passes for respectability but at night he robs graves. Similarly you might consider a character like Charles Darnay who only wants to be ordinary yet is actually the heir of the aristocratic Evremondes.. .
