Sweetbitter Irony

The irony of Tess’s experience in Big Apple

When Tess moves to Big Apple from Ohio, she is full of expectations, and her primary goal is to live a good life. Tess's prayers are answered when she gets a good job as a waitress. Satirically, Tess falls into the temptation of the town's immoral lifestyle. With time, Tess assumes that life has no limits and offers herself to work as a bartender.

Marching tattoos

While working at the restaurant, Tess meets Jake, a man raised by Simone since childhood. Tess falls in love with Jake, and Simone does not oppose their union. Ironically, Tess realizes that Jake has a similar tattoo as hers, and she concludes that they are brought together by fate.

The abrupt closure of the restaurant

Tess loves her work every day, and she looks forward to saving more. The restaurant is the mode in town, and every person wants to be associated with it. Tess considers herself lucky for being part of the restaurant's human resource department. Ironically, the inspectors of health strike without warning and close the restaurant for flaunting some health protocols. Consequently, Tess has no option but to face joblessness for a while.

Women's enemies

Tess and Jake are lovers, and they show every move they make in public. Sardonically, despite Simone approving the relationship between Jake and Tess, she is jealous and wants to find a way to hurt Tess. When the restaurant is abruptly closed, Simone organizes a one-month vacation away in France Jake. When Tess discovers that Jake and Simone are going on vacation behind her back, she becomes more jealous of Simone. Therefore, women are their enemies, and they rarely want to see one of their own being happy.

Sex for promotions

Tess is a smart employee, and she does her duties excellently. Ironically, Tess thinks that she can earn a quick promotion by having sex with her boss. After offering her boss sex, she is promoted to a higher rank but transferred to a far workstation. However, the reader finds it satirical that she does not take the position; instead, she takes up a new position as a clerk in a wines and spirits business.
