Why do characters speak at length, and who are they speaking to?

I'm sorry, this is a short-answer literature forum designed for text specific questions. Dialogue and body language are integral in a play's performance. Setting is limited, thus, other elements are extremely important. Lengthy dialogue can be used to speak directly to the audience or another character.
