what is significant about Mr.freeman radical action of slicing his picture?

Mr. Freeman is an inspirational teacher but he also seems to have his own demons. We are not completely sure why he slashes his artwork but he seems rather depressed and angry. He also might want to show the impermanence of art. In any case Melinda likes his display of raw emotion.
