Melinda's flashback is a happy time in her childhood. She's at the apple orchard with her parents, and for her, it's a magical, storybook experience. Her father places her high within a tree, and her parents are closer than she's ever seen them. This flashback allows the reader to see the innocent girl Melinda once was, the happiness rather than the deep depression.
