Melinda would use her closet as a refuge from her trauma and the outside world. The rest of her bedroom is a symbol of the old Melinda before she was abused and traumatized. The room is a symbol of her lost innocence and lost childhood. The room is adorned with pink flowers and Melinda hates it. It reminds her of what she has lost. Redecorating it would also remind her of what she has lost. She feels emotionally stuck in her room until the very end of the novel when she asks her mother if she can redecorate it.
