Mrs. Morel disapproves of every woman wishing to involve herself with Paul. She wants her sons to pay attention to no other woman but herself, she is extremely jealous. After years of focusing all of her attention on her sons and living through their experiences and actions, she has no wish to share them. Paul's brother dies early in the novel, thus her affection is focused on him twofold.
