So Far From God Metaphors and Similes

So Far From God Metaphors and Similes

Angel

When La Loca was resurrected, people became astonished and the father of the church asked her ‘Is this an act of God or of Satan that brings you back to us, that has flown you up to the roof like a bird? Are you the devil’s messenger or a winged angel?’ Father Jerome yelled up to La Loca before she floated down from the top of the church. The metaphor of an angel and devil’s messenger have been employed for her owing to her resurrection after death. People were attending her funeral and it was in the blink of an eye that she woke up and moved upward and climbed the top of the church roof. The father was bewildered regarding her waking up, because she claimed that ‘she was led by God first through hell, then through purgatory, and finally to heaven before being returned to Earth to pray for those left behind.’ She returned with a strange smell and everyone could realize it.

Courage and Wisdom

The metaphor of wisdom and courage has been used for life. The author has promulgated the idea of hope and fearlessness by employing this metaphor. According to the author, ‘life itself being defined as a state of courage and wisdom and not an uncontrollable participation in society.’ A person must act with wisdom and courage to succeed in life, otherwise, he would be crushed by the society. Sofia’s daughters got hurt when they did not act with courage. Caridad married the man whom she loved, without thinking about the consequences or the frivolous nature of the man and eventually she became obsessed with alcohol. He decision of getting indulge in physical relationships with anonymous men was also an act of cowardice. She realized it after being thrown by the society at the side of road, to survive on her own. While she was healing from her physical and emotion wounds, she got to know about wisdom and courage.

Birds

The author has employed the simile of birds when Sofi says, ‘I had to produce the kinds of species that flies!’ Sofi had four daughters and she says people expect to relax like a grandmother, who wants her daughter to take care of her and to visit her with their babies. However, she is not that kind of woman instead she is an iron-willed woman, who inspire her daughters. It was Sofi who assisted her daughters to get out of their depression zone and to restart their lives with wisdom and bravery. She says that she does not want to give away her life after giving birth to four daughters and she would strive to make her daughters fly like birds. Sofi never give up and she was actually an eagle herself, who looked after her daughters and after their deaths she laid the foundation of an association for the mothers of martyrs and saints. She helped her community after becoming the unofficial authority of the town. The simile of bird has also been used for La Loca, when she was resurrected after her death. People wonder whether its God or devil who ‘has flown you up to the roof like a bird.’
