In the end, it is Ishmael who makes the decision that determines Kabuo's fate. By showing the records from the lighthouse to Hatsue, he comes to terms with his love for her. She recognizes what he probably felt, and she is glad that he made the decision to come forward with the truth. Ishmael redeems himself in the eyes of Hatsue as well as living up to be his father's son.
