The destruction of Dresden is reminiscent of Sodom and Gomorrah. Two cities, both toppled to the ground. The narrator, Vonnegut, likens himself to Lot's wife.... the person who looks back at the destruction, the person who gives into their humanity, and the person who turns into a pillar of salt. Vonnegut says this is why his book, Dresden, was a failure..... in being human, he lost his humanity.
