Why is Michael's world a frightening place?

Michael's world is a frightening place because it is focused on one thing.... his sister. His sister's illness and the possibility that one day she will not return home hangs over Michael throughout the novel. Her illness causes him to lose interest in friends and school, to isolate himself. Thankfully, the discovery of Skellif and his friendship with Mina help him cope with his problems.
