The first chapter is important because it sets the stage for the rest of the novel. We learn about Ketterdam (the setting) and the novel's six primary characters...... the crew, who are each outcasts from society. We learn about Kaz, the fortune that is ready for him to take..... as well as the fact that he cannot do it alone.
