why should be six characters? why not five or seven?

I would like to ask why Pirandello has to write six characters intead of five or seven. he would like to represent six theatre power in the theatre? what are these six theatre power?

I'm going to stretch here; I've heard that the six characters allegorically symbolize the theatre itself; six characters; six symbolic objects; six external characteristics.............. that's what I've heard. It sounds plausible to me, and I have never herd any other explanation.
