decapitation of green knight -pagan origins

I have read that the decapitation motif has Celtic origins.
Any information on this? What about origins in pagan English culture?

Not sure - it certainly sounds plausible though

It does have pagan origins.  You can read Alice Buchanan's "The Irish Framework of Gawain and the Green Knight" in PMLA 47, 1932, pp 315-338 for details on the beheading theme.  You should be able to access that if  your school has JSTOR or MLA.

As for English culture, I don't think that was heavily differentiated from Celtic culture prior to the Roman invasion.
