Silas weaving is compared with the spider. Why?

Eliot traces Silas's progression from isolated loaner to well loved father figure. He uses alludes to animals to measure this progression. Near the beginning of the novel Silas is compared to a solitary spider weaving (yes, the spider metaphor) alone.
