I don't think he changes in Chapter 5. I think it is the beginning of change for Silas. He is certainly in a panic over his loss of gold. This loss forces him to actually venture out to a tavern to declare his loss. This is the first time the hermit interacts with people. This begins Salish's re-discovery of people and life. His subsequent adoption of the baby girl does change him.
