Notes to the Teacher

Several terms (including, but not limited to chapter titles and names) may vary across translations of Siddhartha, which was originally written in German. In the text used for this guide, for example, the Buddha is referred to as Gautama, and the ascetics are referred to as Shramanas (not Sramanas). There may be other slight differences in spellings, word choices and chapter names between this and other texts. Consider reading the introduction and notes preceding and following the text used for this guide. The Ferryman is referred to as both "ferryman" and "Vasudeva" both in the text and in this teaching guide.
