In the story, "A Rose for Emily".... why do we need to know about Miss Emily's hair changing?

Miss. Emily's hair changed color in the six months she disappeared from life in town and cloistered herself insode of the house. This time frame also directly corresponds with the disappearance of Homer Barron, causing the reader, and the townspeople, to surmise she'd gone through a traumatic experience.
