What is the title meaning of "A Rose for Emily"

I think the author feels a sense of sorrow for Emily. She wanted something that most Southern women wanted: a house, a family, a husband. Because of her overbearing father, she got nothing. The rose becomes a symbol of sympathy; the rose becomes a final offering to an old lady whose life had past her by.
