I suppose you need to look at the story within the context of the time. The setting is somewhere in Mississippi around 1861-1933. Women were not supposed to act the way Miss. Emily carried on. There were few secrets in town and much rumour and innuendo. Miss. Emily was single which was also a mark of shame. That and her visible fling with Homer Barron certainly caused a stir.
