A Rose For Emily and Other Short Stories

Some critics have suggested that Miss Emily Grierson is a kind of symbol of the Old South, with its outdated ideas of chivalry, formal manners, and tradition. In what sense is she also a victim of those values?

She is a victim in the sense that her father has "protected" her from suitors, because none of the type he would have approved of were available. She also is a victim because of the way the people gossip about Homer when,in fact, he could have been a match for her. The people were going to hold her to a higher standard even though that standard no longer existed.
