Of course the cemetary represents death.

Faulkner may wanting to symbollically illustrate the decay of the southern aristocracy after the American Civil War, which parallels the mental and physical decline tha Miss Emily is experiencing.

Consider the first sentence of the story: ''When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house . . . .''

This clearly links Miss Emily with death and decay.
