Story is third person, being told by someone who has a fairly good knowledge of what is going on. The theme is probably the line that describes why Emily would not let her father's body "go" after his death: She did it because she had to hold onto what she could as people do when they lose something they do not know how to live without. They scorn her because her family has completely disintegrated.

She has a history that is "scandalous." The she becomes a hermit.
