Emily had trouble accepting that her world was changing around her. She stays grounded in the past. She represents the Old South in a town that is changing. She refuses to pay taxes because of the reprieve from Colonel, a man that has been long dead and gone. She also refuses to accept that her father was sick or the idea that he was even deceased.
