A Rose for Emily

What significance does the Rose in the title have since the story never refers to a rose?

I think that Faulkner is implying that Emily deserves a rose for the difficult life she has had. The rose is a symbol of the life she should have had. Emily would have wanted suitors, a husband, and a family. Instead her husband chased all her suitors away. In an interview, Faulkner even stated that Emily deserved a rose for all her hardships.
