He becomes better friends with Prabaker, who offers to take Lin on a tour of "the real Bombay," and introduces him to a group of witty criminal expatriots (including Didier, Modena, Ulla, Maurizio, Vikram and Letitia) who frequent Leopold's, a local establishment.

I've read a lot about strong cast and varna system in India.

Why have Lin never encountered this phenomenon in the book.

Why was the Afghan-Russian war important for Khaderbhai?

Why did he care about the war so much that he planned every small detail of it out right from the beginning - setting Lin up and all?
