how realistic is Shantaram and how much of it really happened to roberts?

Much of it happened, but Roberts definitely plays with the timeline. This is partly due to his sense of artistry, and partly due to his manuscript being ripped up by a guard in Australia. However, we can probably take most of the setting and physical interactions at face value, while recognizing that in reality he may have been in different places at different times than in the novel.
