Shakespeare's plays, which include Richard II and Richard III, were not always historically accurate and often embellished. His characters were real, but they were also infused with life.... he had to garner an audience. As a writer during Elizabeth I's reign, Shakespeare also had to keep the queen happy. Tudor kings and queens are protrayed in favorable light.... Yorkists do not enjoy the same kid gloves, as those who came after them. Shakespeare's plays are meant to entertain and raise consciousness, something in which he is quite successful. He is not a scholar or historian, but he has sparked the imagination and encouraged a desire to know more in his audiences for centuries.
