I think this is the general deffinition:

This Sonnet structure is commonly called the English sonnet or the Shakespearean sonnet, to distinguish it from the Italian Petrarchan sonnet formwhich has two parts: a rhyming octave (abbaabba) and a rhyming sestet (cdcdcd).
