What experiences or revelations lead Marianne to eventually look beyond COl. Brandon's "advanced age"?

Col. Brandon is described as being "on the wrong side of five-and-thirty" and is criticized by Marianne as "old enough to be my father."

Marianne's decision to marry Col. Brandon is the biggest step towards practicality she ever took. Her obsession with Willoughby resulting in her near-fatal illness certainly had something to do with her change in attitude.
