How is Elinor's thought processing and requirement of proof concerning Lucy'a news reflective of her character?

What does she blame Edward for. Why does she feel for Edward? What does this show about Elinor's character?

Elinor is practical. Matters of the heart are subject to objective scrutiny. The news that Lucy Steele and Edward Ferrars have been engaged throws Elinor off. She did not see this in Edward especially since he knows how impulsive and frivolous Lucy is.
