Samson Agonistes Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Samson Agonistes Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Divine power

Samson’s hair is used a symbol to illustrate the link Samson has with God, God’s approval and Samson’s inhuman power. When Samson loses his hair, all the three things symbolized by it disappear too almost immediately.

Darkness

Darkness is the predominant motif in the poem, closely linked with the blindness that Samson experiences. Samson talks about darkness on numerous times and how he feels as a result of being deprived of light. For him, this was the first sign that God is no longer considering Samson a special person.

Power

His former power becomes a synonym with pain for Samson. For him, power meant that he had a special status in his society but after his power disappeared he was left with nothing. For Samson, the notion of power only reminded him of what he had and lost, of what he was supposed to do but didn’t.

Samson mentions the fact that he was supposed to keep a scared promise of silence but he didn’t because he was tempted by Dalila. This incapability symbolizes Samson’s weakness, his tendency to trust everyone and regret it later when he realizes that those who pretend to be his friends are in fact his enemies.

Fallen titan

The idea that Samson is a fallen titan appears frequently in the poem. Samson, his father and the chorus, all talk about Samson’s former glory and how he lost everything, focusing on how fast everything changed.
