Rupert Brooke: Poems Summary

Rupert Brooke: Poems Summary

The Soldier

"The Soldier" is a sonnet that talks of poet’s (who is in the guise of an English soldier) death and what to think of him after he is dead. He glorifies the country that nurtured him, England. He calls himself dust and that his grave will lie beneath the land of England. He will die a peaceful death and go to English heaven.

The Dead

"The Dead" presents a discussion of the soldiers who died for their nation. In the first stanza, he talks about their life and how their hearts with made with joy, they had sorrows and difficulties yet they were brave enough to laugh them off. He provides a vibrant imagery through weather, sunset, music, flowers. The second stanza comes as a contrast to the first one; this talks about the death of soldiers. That though they died but they brought honor to England and they made the deepest possible sacrifice.
