Why does Catherine feel left out of her dad's life?

Catherine's dad seems preoccupied coping with his own difficulties with accepting an autistic son. He doesn't give Catherine enough time or affection.

Catherine’s dad is always occupied with his work and helping David and Cathrine even says that he loves his tomatoes more than he loves her.He never really takes Catherine out somewhere but he always take David to the video store.
