Why does Mercutio's speech about Queen Mab escalate quickly? Is he trying to prove anything to Romeo?

Mercutio's speech escalates because he is angry at Romeo. He sees Romeo's love as impetuous, foolish, and insincere. Mercutio is making a point and trying to snap Romeo out of it. During his rant, Mercutio attacks everything he seemingly believes to be a result of desire.... be it love, money, or monetary reward.
