I suppose it would have been difficult for Benvolio to be part of a family gang that fought constantly with the Capulets. Mercutio could get pretty riled up. Benvolio's character, however, stayed pretty static. He tried to calm things down, even in the midst of an all out brawl. He tried to calm Romeo before he went on his final suicidal rampage. Benvolio never got carried away with the irrational passions showed by other characters in the play.
