How does tension/ suspense build when Juliet's joy turns into despair?

Juliet eagerly awaits the Nurse's return to tell her about plans to marry Romeo. The Nurse enters, distraught and speaking unclearly; Juliet can finds out that her cousin Tybalt is dead and Romeo banished. Her Joy turns to anger and sadness.
