This description is significant because it speaks to Romeo's impetuous, carelessness. Romeo acts without thinking, and generally, his thoughts are of himself first. The "powder" (gunpowder) can also be seen as a metaphor for the poison Romeo purchses before returning. The poison he will impulsively use to take his own life.
