Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's most famous plays. Adapted from a 1592 narrative poem by Arthur Brooke and inspired by a number of other romantic myths and legends (including the tale of Pyramus and Thisbe from Ovid's Metamorphoses, a tale Shakespeare lampooned in A Midsummer Night's Dream, which he likely wrote in the same year as Romeo and Juliet; Xenophon of Ephesus's "Ephesian Tale of Anthia and Habrocomes"; and Geoffrey Chaucer's Troilus and Crisedye, which Shakespeare would also use as source material for another play seven years later).
