Why does Pap care so much about owning the land the Logans live on?

Most of the blacks are sharecroppers, merely renting the land they are on. They are at the mercy of white land owners who treat them badly. There is a sense of pride that the Logans have in owning their own land. It is both a literal and symbolic step forward since the painful wounds of slavery and oppression.
