What does Mrs.Logan mean when she says to Cassie "White people may demand our respect, but what we give them is not our respect but fear"?

What does Mrs.Logan mean when she says to Cassie "White people may demand our respect, but what we give them is not our respect but fear"? please help thxs

Essentially, Mrs. Logan is saying that the white members of their community to do not deserve their respect, nor do they get it. When Mama, Cassie, or anyone else show deference to the Wallaces or the Barnetts, it's because of their fear of reprisal.... not a show of respect.
