What crime did TJ do? Was he released early?

I remember reading this book back in middle school but I don't remember what TJ did that was so bad. If you could please help me with this question, that would be greatly appreciated!

TJ broke into the Barnett's store with RW and Melvin, where the other boys told TJ it would be "okay" to take the gun he wanted and pay the next day. The Barnetts come down during the robbery, after which RW and Melvin phyisically attack them. TJ was jailed. We are not apprised of his trial, or the amount of time he was sentenced for his crime.
